Retro Jays Cards

I go to a bunch of Jays games. Each time, I empty my loose change to get random retro Blue Jay baseball cards from the vending machine. I also have plenty of boxes from my childhood. When I was a kid I remember these cards were some of my most prized possessions. Now they are 25 cents.

Anthony Sanders, 1998 Bowman Chrome, #95

I would love to spend some time discussing Anthony Sanders Blue Jay career, but he only had seven at-bats and I don’t remember any of them. So forget that.

What really matters here is this card. This hideous, hideous card. The scan cannot convey the level of metallic shine going on, so you are missing out on the truly disturbing effect of everything being metallic except for Sanders’ skin. In the right light he the effect makes him look fairly sickly. That is obviously what a player hopes for in their card.

I also find it an odd decision to fill the background with an image of a map showing where he was born. Because you know what unites baseball fans of all ages? Cartography. I am sure kids saw he was born in Tucson and immediately wondered where that was in relation to Scottsdale.
