Retro Jays Cards

Baseball cards helped me fall in love with the game and the Blue Jays. Over a couple of decades I have spent way too much time, and probably money, collecting memories of my baseball fandom. This is a place to wallow in nostalgia for cheap pieces of cardboard and the players on them.

George Bell, 1989 Topps, #50

This is laid back, “I will not pose for your stupid card photo” George Bell. Hat back on his head, arms crossed and staring off into the distance. Awesome. Sadly, around this time was when George started to slide from his mid-80’s greatness. In fact, the 1988 season was arguably his worst as a full time player for the Blue Jays.

But let’s get to more important matters. Earlier this year the always amazing Fangraphs posted what might be the greatest piece they have ever done. Here¬†they ask the important question, is it really Lionel Richie the girl in the “Hello” video loves? Or is it in fact George Bell?

Look at that sculpture and tell me who it bears a closer resemblance to. Lionel Richie capitalized on a poor blind girls love of a baseball star and used it to his twisted advantage. You’re a sick man Lionel.
